Government Catch Up Payments

Posted on 21 October 2022 in News

Announcement from the Ontario Ministry of Education:

Today, the Ontario government launched Catch Up Payments, offering families direct financial support to support their children as they catch up. This money can be used to help to offset costs, whether that be for educational supplies, additional tutoring supports or other items to help their children address learning needs resulting from the pandemic. This new initiative commits a total of $365 million in direct financial relief for parents.

Families of students in publicly funded, private, First Nation/federally-operated or home-school settings will receive financial support. Students (up to 18 years old) can receive $200 per child, while students with special education needs (up to 21 years old) can receive $250. Families can apply for Catch Up Payments through a secure website (https://www.ontario.ca/page/catch-up-payments) where they can create a unique profile for each eligible student and check the status of their application throughout the process. Applications for Catch Up Payments are now open and will remain open until March 31, 2023.

Is your child reluctant or refusing to go to school? Long-term absences often have academic and social repercussions for the students involved.

Come out and join us in the gym of DACS on
Monday, October 31st from 1pm – 3pm
.

We will welcome Sabrina Jaspers, a counsellor who works with Christian Counselling Centre in Hamilton, ON, for a presentation focussing on the topic of “School Refusal/Avoidance/Reluctance.”

We hope to learn about and discuss causes and signals of this kind of anxiety, as well as strategies to resolve this.

Email jelko.oosterhof@dacslaurel.ca by October 20th to reserve your spot!

Note: this event is sponsored by DACS so there is no cost to attend!

There was lots of excitement and activity at DACS this week!

On Thursday the kindergarten and grade 1 class went to Downey’s Farm for a beautiful day of pumpkins and activities.

The grades 7 and 8s participated in the 3km cross country run on Friday. Congratulations to Lydia, who came in first and to the boys team, who finished 3rd.

Top 4 runners for DACS were:
Girls – Lydia, Megan, Kierra, & Kira
Boys – Riley, Jonah, Griffin & Taim

Well done everyone!

Friday was also the Thanksgiving Assembly, hosted by the grades 1 and 2 classes. These little turkeys did a great job!

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…
